BAES-math-night-2Title I recently sponsored the First Grade Family Math Night.  Students and their families were invited to come to school for two hours of fun and exciting math activities.  Parents and students alike had a wonderful time playing math games and learning math in a new way.  Parents and students were able to see how the math centers work in the classroom by being given the opportunity to rotate through the five first grade classrooms and participate in a different activity in each. Thanks to our first grade teachers and all who had a part in planning this event and making it happen.

Each of the first grade teachers picked one of the five strands that are taught through the Investigations Math Series. The math strands are Number Sense, Algebra, Data Analysis and Probability, Geometry and Measurement. The teachers picked some activities and games to help parents understand the way children are learning math in school. The approach to our math lessons in school today is much different than the way parents and grandparents learned them. Our math program is a student centered learning approach. During the Math night students and their parents started in their homeroom class then they rotated to the other classrooms to complete the activities for the different strands.

We were excited about the turn out. We had a total of 61 people at the event.
